Vehicle Description 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible My father purchased this Corvette sometime in 1969.
The car had the rear wheel openings flared to accommodate bigger much wider tires as was popular back then, the fronts were left untouched.
The rear leaf spring had snapped and collapsed on the drivers side with the large rear wheel damaging the left rear fiberglass.
The car never had the front fold away headlights and the front bumpers were removed.
Over time, fiberglass repairs were done on the rear of the car.
In addition, the replacement of the rear spring and suspension linkage along with front springs.
The car sat for years in primer paint.
As kids when we had not much to do we would be tasked with jacking up the car and cleaning the frame with a wire brush and applying Rustoleum.
The frame is undamaged.
My father had informed me that the rear trailing arm bearings were also replaced but then again he did a lot of work that I didn't see.
The rear differential has never been out of the car.
But the half shafts were replaced.
Years went by as parts were slowly accumulated for the car directly from a GM dealership.
The parts were a new OEM fiberglass hood that wasn't modified, along with GM OEM rear quarter panels to replace the flared fenders that nobody liked.
Many other parts came from GM along the years including a brand new Carter AFB carburetor that even in the 70s was a really expensive part.
It also has a GM Magna Pulse ignition system that basically converted the car to a pointless system with a bigger coil.
It was actually a GM add-on in the 60s.
The engine in the car is not original.
The engine now is a 1966 327 block with the cast 300 hp intake.
According to the casting marks it has the double hump heads.
Somewhere along the way the electrical was upgraded to an alternator that doesn't require the external voltage regulator.
From GM the proper exhaust manifolds were located and a new Harrison radiator installed.
Because of over concern about clutch failure a Lakewood bell housing and heavy duty clutch we're installed on the original Muncie transmission.
In the mid to late 70s Eckler's Corvettes Parts opened up and it was there that my father found the Monza style headlights that are in the car now.
We didn't have the internet, we had catalogs and newspaper ads so finding fold away headlights and parts back then wasn't easy and terribly expensive.
In the years to come we located some used front bumpers and brackets that are in decent condition.
The original rear bumpers were rechromed.
Along the way many other parts were accumulated and the seats were recovered in black vinyl as they were originally.
The original 4 piston caliper brakes were plagued with leaks and rebuilt 3-4 times because the car just sat year after year.
It was around 1980 that the car got a regular exhaust system installed and alignment done before it was off to the body shop for over 6 months.
The car was stripped down to bare fiberglass and had the rear quarter panels installed along with final work of installing the headlights that were at that point just mounted in the front end.
The car was painted in the original color of Milano Maroon.
After the car returned from the body shop it was taken on a brief road trip to a local airport for a picture.
The car went back in the garage under the hanging gas heater for the next 38 years.
It had never been registered or insured.
Because of brake leaks on both this car he purchased a complete sets of new brake calipers from Mid America Corvettes.
The alcohol based brake fluid was replaced with the new at the time silicone brake fluid.
After 38
years we haven't seen a leak yet.
The car was moved in and out of the garage under its own power to clean and sweep out the garage.
The oil was changed frequently and spark plugs were replaced twice along with the battery many times.
Again it sat until 2021 when I had the car enclosed shipped from the Midwest to down here in Texas and started looking into everything.
A new set of NGK plugs have been installed.
The carburetor was shipped out and remanufactured.
We have gone through painstaking detail making sure every expensive carb fitting, orifice, breather, and adapters were correctly installed for this application as per GM.
All the rubber fuel line from the mechanical fuel pump to the carb were replaced with the proper steel lines and fuel filter assembly.
The nearly 60 year old starter was replaced recently as it was obviously tired.
Still have the original one on hand.
Both the positive and negative battery cables were replaced.
It runs good.
I don't drive this car for a few simple reasons.
I have a clear title but it has no license plates and has never had plates issued in any state since 1969.
The wiring in this car is 60 years old and wasn't designed to live this long.
The brake system, hoses and lines are original and in condition.
All the fuel lines are also original and I have no idea in what condition.
So the car is not available for test or joy rides.
If you'd like to drive it around, feel free to do so at your own expense.
The car has been in storage with a brand new battery and the cables disconnected.
On the overall condition of the car is good.
The front bumpers are in decent condition and are not rusted.
The Monza style headlights have plexiglass covers that can be removed with 2 small screws.
The front orange round turn signal lights were purchased from GM in the 70s and installed after paint.
Paint on the car is decent for being 42 years old but has some scrapes and scratches around the perimeter.
The doors open and close without any sagging.
The convertible top is original as I know nothing of it being replaced while we have had it.
The weather stipping on the doors and top are original, I wouldn't say great condition as rubber hardens with age.
The rear bumpers are in very good condition and were rechromed sometime in the very early 80's.
Rear 4 tail lights were purchased from GM in the 70s and installed after paint.
Wheels on the car are 15x7 rally wheels with the stainless steel three wing hubcaps and the tires were new 42 years ago.
They still hold air without issues.
Standard tailpipe exhaust with chrome tips.
The driver and passenger seats were recovered in the late 70's but the foam cushion in the seat has become stiff with age.
Carpet is in okay condition and door panels look clean without any cracking.
The power windows work and the vent windows work.
The radio was reworked along with the clock years ago.
Gas pedal, clutch and brake pedal covers were replaced.
The gauges all work.
As far as fluid leaks, the only leaks I have seen were oil stains around the bottom of the valve covers and an occasional drip from either the power steering line or actuator.
Again, age related I do not know the transmission or rear differential service history.
I am being as clear as I can about the condition of this car.
I have seen countless misrepresentations about these cars for decades and have no issues explaining how or why something ended up the way it did.
